Reading Eggs

Reading Eggs comes from ABC Kids in Australia – they have UK and US offices too. The lessons in Reading Eggs complement what they’re taught in schools – and are also used by homeschooling. It’s a good straightforward programme and is browser-based, which means anyone with a PC or Mac, and an Internet connection can use it. The programmes range from age 3 to age 13 – which go on to Reading Eggspress, aimed at 7-13 year old.
The lessons work on a one-to-one basis – your child goes at their own pace rather than being timed to complete a level – though on some sections I’ve seen you’re encouraged to join the dots faster – which she is still a bit wobbly with!  Each programme has been developed by a highly experienced team of educational teachers, writers and developers. The Reading Eggs programme focuses on a core reading curriculum of phonics and sight words using skills and strategies essential for sustained reading success. It supports what children learn at school and will help to improve your child’s results at school. It is called Reading Eggs and is an absolute must for any parent.  Reading Eggs is an online programme which makes learning to read interesting, fun and engaging using online reading games and activities.  They claim it really works – and so far, the results look great!

The programme itself has 120 learn-to-read lessons and 96 spelling lessons. Grace has come in everyday from school since starting the programme and bugged me to use my computer so she can carry on learning. Signing-up started with an assessment of her reading skills to date. It had a possible 40 questions and, when you got 3 wrong, the test would end. Grace got to 34 before she was counted out. This meant that Reading Eggs were able to start her off at the correct level.  Then it was onto the lessons.
As you get through each question, the programme rewards you with golden eggs. You have your own avatar, which the child can alter to suit who they want to be. The lessons are fun and engaging – they even make me want to have a go!
Each child has it’s own Map. This includes the lessons, and progress to date, ‘My House’, Reggie’s Shop – were you can spend your golden eggs on items for your house, Skills Bank where you can earn gold bars, Driving Tests - here you can race cars for a certain period of time once you have answered questions, Music Cafe, Puzzle Park and even Story lands where you can create your own books.
Reading Eggs has 4 different levels – First Steps for ages 3-4, Ready for School for 5-year-old, Fun Practice Makes Perfect for 6-7 years and Continue The Reading Journey for age 7-13 using Reading Eggspress.
