Ground Hog Day

Well today is the day when we find out how long we are going to have winter or if we are going to get spring weather.  Groundhog Day is a holiday celebrated in the United States and Canada on February 2, each year. In weather lore, if a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day and fails to see its shadow because the weather is cloudy, winter will soon end. If, on the other hand, it is sunny and the groundhog sees its shadow, the groundhog will supposedly retreat into its burrow, and winter will continue for six more weeks. Candlemas is usually celebrated on the same day in Europe, and has similar weather lore about the coming weather, making it a possible origin of the holiday in North America.  Do you think that a groundhog can periodic the weather?  It has long been a human desire to make accurate weather predictions.

  1. Nope, I don't think he can predict the weather, but I love the tradition!
It seems to me that we always get six more weeks of winter whether he sees his shadow or not. Love your blog!
